Pack weight is an important factor in a thru-hike. The more weight on my back the more work I must do to carry it up a hill, and the more my quads burn on the way down. A heavier pack means I must consume more Calories, which means I must carry more food, which means I must consu... I think you get the idea.
Ultimately this is a hiking trip and to promote my comfort on the trail, versus my comfort in camp I am packing light. I think of it as though I am gaining 15 lbs. That is the weight of my gear. On top of that I will be carrying three to seven days of food and enough water to get me to the next source. My pack will range from 20-40lbs throughout the trip.
